"A Working Student" explained..

I wanted to do something cheeky, and funny, but found it hard to come up with an idea, initially I was going to make Amy a bar maid as her job, but i didn't feel like there was enough contrast between law student and bar maid, as a bar maid is something that a lot of students do, and its not really something she would hide from her friends!
I thought the idea of a City Maintenance worker was a good idea, because its something that has to be done at night when there is no one about, and its usually a job that you would see a man doing, so it is a dramatic twist to the storyline and I hope it will shock the audience. It is definitely something you could see a young girl hiding from her friends also! litter picking and street sweeping doesn't really say class, but neither does prostitute, so it shows that she is maintaining her integrity as well as the streets of London!!
It also gave me the opportunity to contrast my innuendo, and use phrases like "getting my hands dirty" and is an effective way of tricking the audience and using comedy at the same time!

I googled a job descriptions of a City Maintenance worker, this is one i found for a job being advertised, i think this provides a really good stereotype of what a street cleaner is no one would expect them to be a law student, this is why I think there will be a shock element to my piece.

Position Overview:
The primary goal of the Maintenance Worker is to provide a safe and adequate living/working environment for the tenants at the assigned locations. This position is responsible for the maintenance of a Community Access owned and operated building as well as apartments and an office in a scattered site building. Under the supervision of the facilities manager, the maintenance worker is responsible for the daily maintenance, building cleaning, and other maintenance work in accordance agency policies and procedures.

must be able to communicate effectively, both written and orally; must have basic maths skills; must possess and maintain current certificate of fitness.

Amy: talking to herself Oh god, I am going to be late for work...

Gets make up bag

Amy: my job is awful, and I hate it, I'm only doing my make up to make myself feel better, I may have lowered myself in society, but that doesn’t mean I think less of myself. I'm a student you see, I study Law, luckily I managed to get in before tuition fees went up.. but I am in financial disarray, its not like I didn’t save, do you know how much law books cost? Do you?

Picks up a pile of books

Amy: this one £24.99, this one £30, this one £56!!!! And that's only a few of them, its ridiculous.

Getting wound up, but continues doing make up and getting ready.

Amy: do you think I want to be doing this? do you think I want to traipse the streets at night time? It’s not safe, it’s just the money, I am so desperate for the money, its okay for all the people who got GRANTS, Cassie, my friend got £3000, because her parents are divorced, shes going out tonight, I am going to work, the most degrading job, what I do makes me feel sick. They all ask me what I am up to, where I go, I am too ashamed to tell them..Luckily I work at night time, and I work a patch where none of my friends will see me.. its the only time the streets are quiet, lectures all day working all night, I am exhausted.

Looks around everywhere

Amy: talking to herself where’s my suit?! Picks it up off the floor and holds up a boiler suit ugly right? Working for city maintenance, sweeping the pavement and picking up litter, not really my forte. God I hate it.

Heads toward the door before opening, looks round and winks.

Treatment for "A Working Student"

Girl, student, is doing coursework in bed in her small student room and notices the time, she’s going to be late for work. She is talking directly to the camera about how poor being a student has made her and how she is having to do some awful things to pay for everything, her books, the cost of living, and talking about how awful her job is, whilst talking she is getting ready for work. She is making innuendo, whilst she is talking she’s saying things like “do you think I want to do this, do you think I want to traipse the streets at night time? It’s not safe, it’s just the money, I am so desperate for the money” leading us to believe she is a prostitute, as she continues to dress down for work we are wondering what she is doing and as she leaves the room and goes down the stairs leaving the front door she reveals that she is a street sweeper, a litter picker, a night time janitor. She shuts the door and leaves the room the credits appear.

Change in idea..

My ideas have changed for the better I think, I have decided against using my script for "Walking the Dog" as it would be very hard to construct, I like a challenge, but I feel it would be hard for me to fit the storyline into 5 minutes effectively.
I have chosen to operate within the same genre, and have devised a new script for a short film which I have called "A Working Student" which has a black comedy theme to it and an entertaining twist at the end...
